Angry threats in car park row

08 Sep, 2010 01:00 AM
A TARNEIT childcare centre manager claims her staff have been threatened by angry parents illegally using its private car park to drop off or pick up children from nearby Baden Powell College.

Elise Christie, of the Early Learning Centre Rose Grange, told the Weekly there had been "nothing but trouble" since the school opened two years ago.

There was a shortage of car parks around the area, she said, which forced many parents from the school to use nature strips. Some parked in one of the centre's 20 spaces or even double-parked behind cars in the car park.

"At times, our staff members have gone out to confront these parents and to tell them it's a private car park, and they've been yelled at and abused.

"Some have even had their cars scratched and dented - it's getting out of hand. We've even had some parents get here at 2pm, an hour before school finishes, to get a space in our car park."

Ms Christie said the centre recently had to call an ambulance, but because the car park was full it was blocked and had to reverse out.

"We've got five children with anaphylaxis so we need clearance and easy access to the centre," she said.

"At our centre, we have children with disabilities whose parents need to be able to use the car park, along with grandparents with limited mobility who come to do the pick-up duties."

Leading Senior Constable Nathan Warrick, of Wyndham North police, said they would step up patrols of the area and issue on-the-spot fines where necessary.

"Although the parking issue is a civil matter, when we were told threats had been made to the centre's staff, it was quite concerning," he said.

"We would call on parents at the school to stop using the car park.

"We understand there's frustration about the parking situation, but making threats is not acceptable and we would urge everybody to be patient."

Wyndham Council chief executive Kerry Thompson said it had taken steps to alleviate parking issues around the school, including introducing no-stopping signs and restricted zones.

Since July, local laws officers have issued 40 tickets to drivers for failing to obey road rules around the college. Leading Senior Constable Warrick said he believed the school had urged parents in its newsletter to refrain from using the centre's car park.
