City's past to be up to date

01 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
WYNDHAM'S colourful history is set to be documented, with the council commissioning a new book and website about the city's past.

Known as the Wyndham History Project, the book and website will be written by Castlemaine historian Geoff Hocking.

It's hoped residents will contribute to the project by sharing their stories, memories, photographs and memorabilia.

Werribee District Historical Society, which has released a book about the first 100 years of Werribee, believes the project will encourage people to learn more about their local area.

Member Lance Pritchard said he welcomed any project which would get residents more interested in the area's past.

"We need something to make history more interesting," he said. "We do have a very interesting history, it's just a matter of getting it out there."

The book and website will be launched in mid-2013. The site will be regularly updated with new research.

Mr Pritchard hopes the book will pay as much attention to Wyndham's history from the 1930s onwards as it does to the municipality's

early years.

"[Recent history] has not been documented a lot. There is research that has got to be done

into that."

Chaffey Ward's Cr Shane Bourke said the history project would remind residents what Wyndham had achieved.

"Undertaking a project such as this will remind us what a vital role the community has played in building such a strong municipality."
