WYNDHAM residents are being encouraged to get to know their neighbours and help create a family-friendly environment in their communities.
National Neighbour Day founder Andrew Heslop said once people got over the initial nervousness of meeting new neighbours, lifelong friendships could be formed.
"People are always nervous initially when connecting with those around them and I think television shows play a big part in that," he said. "Viewers can confuse a friendly neighbour with somebody who's being too intrusive or a nosy person. In reality, getting to know your neighbours is a really positive experience and can actually lighten the load in our busy lives."
Mr Heslop said often it took only one person to put the word out about a local book club, mothers' group or walking group for people to get involved.
One new development which is keen to promote community involvement is Saltwater Coast in Point Cook. Developer FKP will stage a 'meet your neighbour' day in August with live music, children's activities and entertainment.
Resident Yara Bakri went to the first one last year and said it was a positive experience which helped her get to know her neighbours.
"It was ... really nice to meet similar people with young families. The atmosphere was great
... it's nice to know we're moving to a community with a lot of friendly faces."
FKP executive general manager Evian Delfabbro said good neighbours made for strong communities.
"We have introduced these days to enable new residents to meet and socialise before moving into the area. We've been thrilled with the feedback from our residents."
National Neighbour Day is held each March.
