 Rain brightens farmer's hopes

Rain brightens farmer's hopes

08 Sep, 2010 01:00 AM
RECENT rain has put a smile on the face of Werribee canola grower James Bufton, who is looking at his best season in 10 years.

After several down seasons through the drier weather, Mr Bufton, who has followed on from his father who started growing canola in 1982, is glad the waiting game appears to be over.

"We have received double the amount of rain which we had last year, which is a really good start," he says.

"It's about this time of year that the natural flowering process occurs and the last few years of it we have struggled a bit with the dry weather. So far we have about the same amount of canola as normal, but the crops are looking a lot better."

He says if it is a kind spring, "we are looking at a very good season, which has been a long time coming".

"We've just about reached saturation levels so we don't need much more rain."
