GOING to church might not be everyone's idea of fun, but Point Cook's Phil and Tracy Shand are working to change that.
Four months ago, the pastors set up Lightpoint Church, Point Cook's newest place of worship.
Mr and Mrs Shand had previously run a church in Chadstone, which attracted more than 200 people each week, but gave it up to build a congregation from scratch in Point Cook. The church services initially were at The Brook, but soon moved to the Point Cook Community Learning Centre as a more central space.
Mrs Shand said the church offered a contemporary service. "It's not a traditional church. We have a band and we are trying to make our messages relative to life. We'd love to have new people from the community who don't usually attend church to come along and see what we're up to."
The pastors hope to start up community groups, such as childcare sessions and English lessons for migrants.
"We want to give back to the community. We know there are some people who are living isolated lives after moving to Point Cook. We want to offer services to help them cope," she said.
