Hatch Shield: Tigers have high expectations for next year

25 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
WERRIBEE was thrilled to finish the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association's elite under-15 RM Hatch Shield with a split in the win-loss column.

The Tigers were treating this campaign as a calm before the storm with so many bottom-age players in its ranks.

They even fielded two 13-year-olds who coach Jonathon Burton joked "would not even be four foot yet".

"We only had four top-age kids. The fact we won three games with a bottom-age side is an impressive performance."

The Tigers might have been light on for experience, but not leadership.

The praise came thick and fast for captain Cam Yuille and vice-captain Zach McMillan, who directed the ship.

The pair were part of last year's team and evolved into the positions of authority

because of their maturity and knowledge of the game.

"They grew into their roles," Burton said. "Me and [coach] Chris [Hennessy] didn't have to say anything in terms of tactics as the tournament wore on."

McMillan, a product of the Werribee Juniors stable, was the standout for the Tigers.

He snared seven wickets at 13.86 and smashed 49 in the second round win over Williamstown.

The Tigers liked what they saw from openers Kyle Penaluna and Sankeerth Nekkadapu.

Despite it being an "exhausting" two weeks, Burton is likely to put his hand up for the role again next summer. "I had an absolute ball. And with the heap of talented kids around Werribee and the strong group of kids we've got, I think we'll give it a red hot crack [at reaching the finals] next year," he said.
