Hatch Shield: Werribee falters then thrives

18 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
WERRIBEE remains in the under-15 RM Hatch Shield west group finals race, despite experiencing a gamut of emotions in week one of the tournament.

The Tigers got off to an atrocious start with a hammering at the hands of ladder-leader Yarraville in the opener.

But they didn't let that setback ruin their progress, picking up victories over Williamstown and Sunshine in the remaining two matches of the first week.

Opening day was one the Tigers would rather have not shown up for.

They were off colour with the bat, all out for just 75 in 43 overs.

The Eagles passed the target with ease. They sent the ball flying in all directions en route to 6-195 off 45 overs.

Less than 24 hours later, Tigers coach Chris Hennessy had a job to do to get his players' minds back on the job for a clash with rivals Williamstown. The Seagulls produced a solid 144 after electing to bat at Bayside Secondary College and the Tigers erased the bad memories of a day earlier by reaching the target six down.

The run chase was executed to perfection with Zachary McMillan (49), Kyle Penaluna (33) and Cameron Yuille (25) prominent.

For the second day in a row, Ethan Frenkel was the Tigers' leading wicket-taker with 3-32.

The Tigers ensured it was no flash in the pan with a 27-run win over Sunshine on Thursday.

Penaluna (28) and McMillan (3-6) were the focal points of the win.
