THAT trademark cheeky smile will be etched on the face of Sam Kater for some time yet.
The young half-forward/midfielder could do no wrong as he played an integral part in North Footscray's drought-breaking win over Parkside in an edge-of-your-seat grand final.
The 21-year-old was best-afield and went home with the coveted Rex Swann Medal.
"I'm pretty happy," he told the Weekly on the ground after the game.
"It's a really good feeling."
Kater, who displayed his great evasive skills and ball-winning ability, has played in 10 consecutive grand finals from juniors to now.
On Sunday, he squared the ledger at 5-5.
This one holds extra significance from an individual viewpoint.
"You don't get sick of this feeling," he said as he looked down at his premiership medallion. "It's the first time I got best-on-ground in one."
Kater revealed the playing group was racked with nerves before the game.
They had the weight of history on their shoulders.
"We hadn't won one for a while and the nerves were running around. It's always hard when a team gets a jump and to come back from 22 points down at three-quarter-time ... there's no better feeling."
